Mark Wahlberg’s diet keeps him lean and fit

As an A-list actor, Mark Wahlberg knows that his physique is as much of a portfolio asset as his acting skills. Since coming on to the acting scene, he has adapted his body to realistically portray his characters.

This meant bulking up for movies like Pain & Gain. It required him to get lean for Spencer Confidential. Mark keeps his diet and exercise regimen under tight control.

His workout routine is nearly legendary. He follows a rigid eating pattern. Now a diet that is evolving towards vegetarianism helps Mark Wahlberg control his health and weight. I’d like to see if there are any lessons in his program that can help me on my journey to weight loss and fitness.

Mark Wahlberg’s diet enabled him to drop 10 pounds in 5 days

Mark’s quest to quickly drop some pounds was a desire to look especially cut and fit for “Spenser Confidential”. To that end, he “trained like a crazy person” for five months. He kick-started his weight loss with a bone broth diet that shed 10 pounds of body weight in just 5 days.

Importantly, Mark said in an interview that he dropped both body fat and visceral fat. The visceral fat is the layer of sub-abdominal fat considered the worst for men to carry.

To keep cutting fat even as he bulked up and got ripped for the role, Mark Wahlberg kept to a clean diet of mostly steamed vegetables and broth. This included small amounts of protein added to his meals in the evenings.

I used a similar eating program to start my own Jack Gets Fit Diet. I relied on bone broth and vegetables like kimchi. While I initially saw success from cutting out sugar and carbs and moving to broth and vegetables, I couldn’t sustain the regimen. To be fair, I was starting at zero without the benefits of an already toned body and stoked metabolism.

Mark keeps a purposeful balance between his diet and his exercise regimen

Although what he eats counts for a lot, diet is not Mark Wahlberg’s only tool for weight loss and fitness. A glance at his fitness schedule shows he uses everything from weights to HIIT, as well as stretches and cryotherapy.

His diet isn’t monolithic, as he will vary between solid meals and shakes. He has also transitioned back and forth between animal protiens like chicken and fish and vegetarian practices.

And he keeps a balance of work and play. His routine includes time for golf, playing with his kids, and other non-gym activities that probably prevent physical and mental burnout.

In addition to his diet, he makes time for spiritual exercise, too

An important element of his fitness program is making time for prayer. Mark says he starts his day with half and hour of prayer and reading of scripture.

There is little doubt that this sort of inner reflection serves to both motivate and inspire Mark to pursue his success. It gives him a buffer between getting up and working out to “get his mind and spirit right” to meet the challenges of the day. Mark’s challenges can be monumental, too. Taking the time necessary to put his thoughts in alignment with his actions (and vice versa) ensures that he is not on a treadmill – working out but going nowhere. He knows and understands how every meal, every rep, every hour counts towards realizing his goals.

And the benefits extend beyond his body and the movie screen. Mark is a notoriously shrewd and savvy businessman, with interests in producing as well as outside Hollywood. His investments include restaurants, fitness centers, and car dealerships. I believe his meditative moments first thing in the morning are a big part of shaping his disciplined and entrepreneurial mindset.

A long-time meat-eater, Mark’s diet is now mostly vegetarian

As Mark pushed himself to get into shape for his role in “Spenser Confidential” he began to change to a plant-based diet. Saying that he wasn’t feeling so well during that time, he turned his palate towards mostly vegetables. The change, he claimed, made him feel great.

Mark Wahlberg should certainly know his own body. He says he recovers faster from his grueling 4am workouts and that he feels less inflammation in his body overall.

He also so made the switch to treat what his doctor suspected was leaky gut syndrome. Eating a meat-heavy diet is thought to be a major factor in inflammation and digestive distress for millions of people.

Since going to a mostly vegan diet Mark claims he is feeling better and has more energy than he has had in several years. He doesn’t need to fast as part of his diet routine anymore, either.

And he added Impossible Burger to the menus of his family-owned restaurant chain Wahlburgers.

Where I am today

I’m glad to know that extreme weight loss is possible through bone broth dieting, even if I was not able to sustain it. If I can reach a satisfactory level of fitness and willpower, then I’m willing to use Mark Wahlberg’s example of determination and discipline to break a future roadblock in my weight loss struggle.

This morning I weighed in at 262.4. I am planning to fully engage in my diet program for the next 120 days.

I will lose weight by using bone broth and keeping to my intermittent fasting routine. Science and my personal history prove that. The challenge is going to be facing the world again after so many months of idleness and restrictions.
